Synthetic vs Natural
Or why I believe in science :D
Natural gems had enough time and experience to form their own personalities. Many of them have lived through earth changes and felt the presence of people from within the earth. They have their likes and dislikes, and energies they are attracted to. Some natural gems are home to various spirits and entities. Believe me, you will know if a natural gem doesn't like you ;)
Unfortunately, many precious natural gems are mined within conflict areas by oppressed people. I would rather not go into a discussion about karma here, but this is one of the reasons why I am exploring the field of synthetic gemstones. Natural gemstones, since they are rare, are often quite expensive. Jyotish gemstones have to be free of flaws or else they will be ineffective and even downright unlucky. Flawless natural gemstones are beyond the budget of many people, and even secondary stones can run to high prices. Another thing to consider is treatments and enhancements: sapphires and other gems are frequently heated to just below melting point to clarify and deepen their colors. Fillers and additives are also used to hide flaws in a natural gemstone. This is all ok from a fine jewelry perspective, but it renders these gems useless for Jyotish purposes.
Synthetic gems just out of the lab are brand sparkling new with untapped potential. Synthetic gems are usually not treated once created. They have the chemical structures of natural gems, but have not absorbed the flavors of the earth. Thus, they may need positive programming and direction. Many synthetic gems are born from a seed of natural material. You could say they're like a second generation or even clones of natural crystals. They are made of the same material (and have identical chemical compositions), just formed in different places. Would you call a living clone of a dog a fake dog?
However, to people who can feel such things, a synthetic gem may feel "empty" compared to a natural gem. Since these gems are born away from a natural environment, they are less likely to have a deva or spirit residing in them or be home to elemental creatures. It may take work to program the gem but they are not limited in possibility. You may have to put the consciousness into the gem and not the other way around.
The best scenario would be finding (and affording) a flawless natural gem which is home to friendly spirits who like you. But, if you cannot get a hold of a natural, flawless ruby, consider trying a synthetic, lab created ruby with the same chemical composition, which is internally flawless, larger, and at a fraction of a natural ruby's exorbitant price. At the very least, the synthetic gem is good for color therapy.
Note: I have recently come across some opinions from astrologers that synthetic gems impart only the negative aspects of the planets they represent. Please use caution when experimenting with synthetic gem therapy. When in doubt, always get a consultation with a professional astrogemologist and use natural Jyotish quality gemstones.
